A blues composition by Miles Davis, written in 1959 and first recorded for his landmark album Kind of Blue, widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time.
The piece is a 12-bar blues played in 6/8 time, giving it a distinctive waltz feel that sets it apart from traditional blues forms. A repeating bass ostinato runs throughout the piece, while a horn vamp separates the solos. Built on just a few modal changes, the composition creates a meditative, open space for improvisation. The key is G major.
The definitive recording is on Kind of Blue (1959), featuring a sextet of John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. Davis also recorded a faster live version on My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis in Concert (1964). The tune has since been recorded over 400 times by artists across the jazz spectrum.
