"Cabin in the Sky" is a jazz standard composed by Vernon Duke (born Vladimir Dukelsky) with lyrics by John Latouche. It was written as the title song for the 1940 Broadway musical of the same name, where it was introduced by Ethel Waters in the role of Petunia Jackson.
This graceful 32-bar ballad beautifully blends gospel warmth with the sophisticated jazz harmonies for which Duke was renowned. Trained as a classical composer, Duke brought an elegant melodic sensibility to his popular works, and this song is a prime example. The melody unfolds with serene, flowing phrases that evoke the heavenly refuge described in the lyric. Its gentle harmonic palette makes it equally effective as a slow ballad or at a relaxed medium tempo, appealing to both vocalists and instrumentalists.
Ethel Waters's original Broadway cast performance and her reprise in the 1943 MGM film directed by Vincente Minnelli remain the definitive vocal interpretations. In the jazz instrumental realm, Curtis Fuller's album Cabin in the Sky (Impulse!, 1962) offers a richly textured trombone-led exploration of the tune.
