"Blue Room" is a show tune composed by Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) with lyrics by Lorenz Hart, introduced in the 1926 Broadway musical The Girl Friend by Eva Puck and Sammy White. It was recorded that same year by The Revelers and quickly became a standard.
The song is a 32-bar romantic number in which the narrator dreams of an intimate "blue room" shared with a lover. Rodgers's elegant, singable melody pairs beautifully with Hart's characteristically witty lyrics, and the tune's compact harmonic structure lends itself well to jazz interpretation. It works effectively as both a ballad and a medium swing vehicle, offering improvisers a warm, inviting framework for melodic exploration.
Miles Davis recorded a notable small-group version in 1951, and Chet Baker's trumpet interpretation is widely admired for its lyrical beauty. Ella Fitzgerald included the song on her Rodgers and Hart Song Book (1956). Other significant jazz recordings include those by Thad Jones (1956), Jimmy Smith (1957), Hank Jones (1958), and Bill Charlap (1999).
