"Whisper Not" is a hard bop classic composed by Benny Golson in 1956. Golson wrote the tune in roughly twenty minutes at George Wein's Storyville club in Boston while touring with Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Along with "I Remember Clifford," it stands as one of Golson's most celebrated compositions.
The tune is a 32-bar composition in C minor with a distinctive structure in which each section carries its own character. The harmonic language is rooted in the minor key with chromatic movement that creates a moody, sophisticated atmosphere. A defining feature of the arrangement is its shout chorus—a special ensemble passage inserted between the final solo and the closing head—that has become an integral part of performance practice. The tag ending on the last four bars of the A section is another essential element that performers should observe.
The earliest recording was made in 1956 by Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Trumpeters Lee Morgan and Thad Jones both recorded the tune before Golson himself had the chance, on his 1957 album Benny Golson's New York Scene. The version by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, with Golson in the saxophone chair, remains a quintessential recording.
