"Wave" is an instrumental bossa nova composition by Antonio Carlos Jobim, recorded for his landmark 1967 album of the same name, Wave. The album featured lush string arrangements by Claus Ogerman that became inseparable from the tune's identity.
Written in D major with an AABA form, the melody flows with an effortless, wave-like motion, perfectly embodying its title. Jobim's signature chromatic harmony—rich with major 7th chords, diminished passing chords, and subtle modulations—creates a warm, shimmering harmonic landscape beneath the bossa nova rhythm. Originally composed as an instrumental, English lyrics were added later, making it popular in both vocal and instrumental settings. The tune's harmonic sophistication rewards close study, with each chord change contributing to an organic sense of motion.
Jobim's own recording on the Wave album, featuring his piano alongside Ogerman's orchestrations, remains the definitive version. Among jazz instrumentalists, Oscar Peterson and Joe Henderson (on his acclaimed album Double Rainbow) have delivered particularly noteworthy interpretations.
