"Valse Hot" is a jazz waltz composed by tenor saxophone giant Sonny Rollins, first recorded for his 1956 album Sonny Rollins Plus 4 on Prestige Records. Rollins wrote the piece while serving as a sideman in the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet.
Set in A-flat major (also performed in B-flat), the tune is written in 3/4 time—an unusual meter for jazz in the mid-1950s, making it one of the pioneering jazz waltzes that helped pave the way for later classics in triple time. The melody blends playfulness with elegance, marrying the driving energy of hard bop with the flowing grace of a waltz. Improvising in 3/4 presents a distinctive challenge: soloists must rethink their phrasing and swing conception within the waltz framework, making this tune a stimulating departure from the standard 4/4 repertoire.
The original recording on Sonny Rollins Plus 4 features an extraordinary lineup: Clifford Brown on trumpet, Richie Powell on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums. This session carries special historical weight, as Brown and Powell died in a car accident just three months after the recording, making it one of their final studio appearances.
