"San Francisco Holiday (Worry Later)" is a 32-bar AABA composition by Thelonious Monk, written on New Year's Eve 1959. Originally titled "Classified Information," it was renamed "Worry Later" for its first recording, then finally given the name "San Francisco Holiday" in tribute to his family's extended stay in San Francisco.
Set in E♭ major, the tune bears Monk's unmistakable melodic fingerprint—angular phrases, unexpected rhythmic displacements, and a deceptive simplicity that conceals considerable harmonic depth. The melody requires sensitivity to Monk's unique sense of timing, where silence and space are as important as the notes themselves. True to its subtitle, the piece carries a buoyant, carefree quality that invites relaxed but attentive improvisation.
The first recording was made live on April 29, 1960, at the Blackhawk club in San Francisco, released on Thelonious Monk at the Blackhawk under the title "Worry Later." It later appeared as "San Francisco Holiday" on Monk in Italy. Both recordings feature Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone in the quartet setting that defined Monk's working band of this era.
