"Pent Up House" is a 1956 composition by Sonny Rollins, the tenor saxophone giant known as the "Saxophone Colossus." Rollins is celebrated for his extraordinary improvisational powers and his ability to develop motifs with unmatched inventiveness, making him one of the most important figures in jazz history.
The tune features a compact 16-bar AABA form in the key of G major. Built on a foundation of ii-V-I progressions, the harmony is relatively straightforward, but the melody's bouncing syncopation and angular accents give the piece a distinctive rhythmic character. Typically performed at medium to fast tempos, the short form cycles quickly, demanding spontaneous creativity from soloists—a quality that has made it a staple at jam sessions.
The original recording appears on Sonny Rollins Plus 4 (Prestige, 1956), featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, Max Roach on drums, and Richie Powell on piano. Tragically, both Brown and Powell died in a car accident just three months after this session, making this album a precious and irreplaceable document of two brilliant musicians at the height of their powers.
