"Our Delight" is a 1946 modern jazz composition by Tadd Dameron, the pianist, composer, and arranger widely regarded as the "architect of bop." Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon called Dameron the "romanticist" of bebop, and this tune perfectly illustrates why.
Set in a 32-bar AABA form, typically in Ab, the piece features a bubbly, jaggedly ascending syncopated theme that is instantly memorable. What sets it apart is Dameron's meticulous arranging behind the solos — written counter-melodies, call-and-response patterns, and shifting internal chord voicings that bring an almost orchestral sophistication to the small-group format. Dameron himself likened his approach to Debussy and Ravel, aiming for a coherent, flowing musical narrative.
The original recording is by Dizzy Gillespie's big band (1946), featuring a masterful trumpet solo by Fats Navarro. Dameron's own small-group sessions for Blue Note, with Navarro, are equally essential for appreciating his compositional artistry.
