"Beautiful Love" is a popular song composed by Victor Young (1900–1956), Wayne King, and Egbert Van Alstyne, with lyrics by Haven Gillespie. It was introduced by the Wayne King Orchestra in 1931 and quickly became associated with King's signature gentle waltz style. The tune also served as a love theme in the 1932 horror classic The Mummy.
The composition uses a 16-bar form with a repeat and a second ending, set in the key of D minor. The harmony moves through a series of ii–V–i progressions in the minor key, with a brief modulation to the relative major that provides welcome contrast before returning to the darker home tonality. Originally a waltz, the tune has been widely adapted in jazz to 4/4 swing and ballad tempos, where its minor-key chord changes provide an excellent vehicle for harmonic exploration. It remains one of the most frequently called minor-key standards at jam sessions.
Among the most influential jazz recordings is the Bill Evans Trio's introspective rendition on the 1961 album Explorations, which transforms the tune into a meditative ballad. Guitarist Joe Pass also delivered memorable solo guitar interpretations that showcase the tune's harmonic richness.
