"My Little Boat," originally titled "O Barquinho," is a bossa nova classic composed by Brazilian guitarist Roberto Menescal in 1961, with Portuguese lyrics by Ronaldo Bôscoli. Menescal was a key figure in the founding of bossa nova, and the song reportedly came to him while stranded on a boat off the coast of Cabo Frio near Rio de Janeiro.
The song's harmonic structure is distinctive and unusual: it features a descending sequence of major 7th chords connected by intermediate dominant chords, creating a chromatic movement rooted in tritone substitution. Typically played in G major, the progression descends stepwise before arriving at the dominant (D7) in the sixth bar, then takes an unexpected detour through the iii chord before resolving. This chromatically rich yet melodically buoyant framework perfectly captures the sensation of drifting on the sea, making it a favorite among jazz and bossa nova musicians alike.
Among the most celebrated recordings is the version by Brazilian vocalist Nara Leão, accompanied by Menescal himself on guitar. The English-language adaptation, with lyrics by Buddy Kaye, was notably recorded by Peggy Lee in 1963 and has since become a jazz session staple.
