"How Insensitive" (originally "Insensatez") is a bossa nova masterpiece composed in 1961 by Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Brazilian musician who helped bring bossa nova to the world stage. The original Portuguese lyrics were written by Vinícius de Moraes, with an English adaptation by Norman Gimbel.
Set in D minor, this 32-bar composition draws direct inspiration from Frédéric Chopin's Prelude No. 4 in E minor, featuring a descending chromatic bass line that evokes melancholy and introspection. The harmony moves from D minor to a brief excursion into C minor before returning, creating a subtly shifting tonal landscape. The lyric explores the narrator's regret over emotional coldness toward a lover — a theme perfectly mirrored by the piece's wistful harmonic movement. The relatively slow bossa nova tempo makes the form feel expansive, offering rich terrain for improvisation.
João Gilberto's 1961 recording on his self-titled album established the definitive version and helped cement the song as a bossa nova cornerstone. The 1967 collaboration between Frank Sinatra and Jobim on Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim remains one of the most celebrated vocal interpretations in jazz.
