"You Stepped Out Of A Dream" was composed by Nacio Herb Brown in 1940 for the 1941 film Ziegfeld Girl. With lyrics by Gus Kahn, this enchanting number captures the wonder of a dreamlike romantic encounter and has become a favorite among jazz musicians.
The form is a two-part AB structure, commonly played in C major (originally D major). The harmony is particularly striking: the A section opens on the tonic but immediately moves up a half step to the flat-II major seventh chord, creating a floating, dreamlike quality that perfectly matches the title. The progression then cycles through ii-V-I patterns in flat-VI and IV, offering an engaging and colorful harmonic journey. The tune is also frequently performed as a bossa nova.
Notable jazz recordings include Wes Montgomery's version on So Much Guitar! (Riverside, 1961), which beautifully showcases his warm octave technique. Sonny Rollins and Jim Hall have also delivered memorable interpretations, each bringing a distinct approach to this harmonically adventurous standard.
