"Undecided" is a swing-era classic composed by trumpeter and arranger Charlie Shavers in 1938. The tune famously got its name by accident: when Shavers's publisher asked for the title, he telegraphed back "Undecided" because he hadn't named it yet, and the editors took it as the song's title.
Typically played in C or B-flat major, the tune follows a 32-bar AABA form with a catchy, instantly memorable melody and a swinging, upbeat feel. The harmonic structure is straightforward yet engaging, providing solid ground for improvisation while maintaining the infectious energy of the swing era. Lyrics were later added by Sid Robin, reportedly written with Ella Fitzgerald in mind. The tune's accessible chord changes and lively character have made it a perennial favorite at jam sessions, equally effective at moderate or brisk tempos.
The first recording was made by John Kirby and His Onyx Club Boys in October 1938. Benny Goodman's orchestra recorded a popular version that December, arranged by Eddie Sauter. Ella Fitzgerald's 1939 rendition with Chick Webb's orchestra became a major hit, reaching number eight on the charts and cementing the song's place in the jazz repertoire.
