"Tricotism" is a bebop composition written in 1954 by bassist and composer Oscar Pettiford, one of the founding figures of modern jazz bass and a pioneer of the cello as a jazz instrument.

Set in D-flat major with a 32-bar AABA form, the melody is a quintessential bebop line built primarily on eighth notes, with well-placed triplets that propel the phrases forward. The opening four-note motif serves as the seed for the entire composition, developing through call-and-response patterns across the A sections. The bridge shifts to A7, creating a striking harmonic contrast before returning to the home key. Originally conceived as a bass feature, the tune's strong melodic construction has made it a favorite across all instruments, offering both technical challenge and rich harmonic material for improvisation.

The definitive early recording appears on Lucky Thompson's 1956 album Tricotism, featuring Pettiford himself on bass. The Oscar Peterson Trio's electrifying live version on The Sound of the Trio (1961), recorded at the London House in Chicago with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, is equally celebrated.
