"Time on My Hands" is a popular song with music by Vincent Youmans, published in 1930. It was introduced in the Broadway musical Smiles by Marilyn Miller and Paul Gregory, and became a hit the following year with charting versions by Hal Kemp, Bing Crosby, and Ray Noble.
Written in C major in a 32-bar AABA form, the melody has the flowing elegance characteristic of Youmans at his finest, perfectly complementing the romantic lyric. The harmony is rich with II-V progressions that provide attractive material for jazz improvisation. The tune works beautifully as a slow ballad but is equally effective at medium tempo, where its graceful melodic contours swing gently. Its broad range and lyrical phrasing make it a rewarding choice for both vocalists and instrumentalists.
A standout jazz recording is Ben Webster's version on Soulville (1957), where his warm, breathy tenor tone brings out the song's deep romanticism. Keith Jarrett's solo piano interpretation from his Carnegie Hall concert has also earned considerable acclaim among jazz enthusiasts.
