"People" was composed by Jule Styne for the 1964 Broadway musical Funny Girl, where it was introduced by Barbra Streisand and became her signature song. Styne, one of Broadway's most celebrated composers, created a catalogue of hit shows including Gypsy, Bells Are Ringing, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The single reached number five on the Billboard pop chart.
The song follows a 32-bar AABA form, originally in B♭ major. Its grand, sweeping melody and warm harmonic language make it a quintessential Broadway ballad. For jazz musicians, the tune's rich chord changes provide ample room for expressive improvisation, and it works well at a range of tempos from slow ballad to medium swing.
Notable jazz recordings include Wes Montgomery's guitar rendition, which reimagines the melody with his signature octave technique, and Gabor Szabo's distinctively exotic interpretation. Ella Fitzgerald's live performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, captured on her Carnegie Hall album, remains a memorable vocal treatment of this enduring standard.
