"Imagination" was composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Johnny Burke, published in 1940. Van Heusen originally wrote the melody as a teenager; years later, Burke added the lyrics that gave the song its dreamy, romantic character. Competing hit recordings by the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras propelled it into the standard repertoire.
The tune is a 32-bar AABA form in Eb major. The A sections feature a gently flowing melodic line over rich harmonic motion anchored by ii-V-I progressions, while the bridge introduces colorful modulations through the subdominant minor area. The overall harmonic palette is lush and warm, making the song equally effective as a slow ballad or at a relaxed medium tempo. Its accessible melody and sophisticated changes offer rewarding material for both vocalists and instrumentalists.
The landmark jazz recording is Art Pepper's version on Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section (1957), where he is joined by Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones — Miles Davis's celebrated rhythm section. Frank Sinatra's early recording with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (1940), arranged by Axel Stordahl, remains a historically significant vocal rendition.
